Faith Is Different Than Beliefs

Where there is faith, there are fewer beliefs. We use beliefs to shore up opinions, rather than a relationship with the cosmos. Faith is what we call the relationship with the cosmos. It's different than beliefs.

Beliefs would be sort of the candy that comes in a candy wrapper, out of faith. But faith is the function, the deep deep function. So when you use the word faith as a noun, it doesn't work. “I should have faith.” You know, I should go to the grocery store and see if I can buy some faith. It doesn't go that way.

So what is faith? Faith is “faith-ing.” It's a verb. It's an activity. It's a function. And the function goes like this: “I open myself up to the central intelligence of the universe, so that I might live for the purpose for which I was made.”

And when I can come with that attitude, which is the attitude that seeks to be in truth, which seeks to be able to say: what does surrender mean? Surrender means, I'm letting go of how I would like the world to be, and I'm asking the universe, "How do you want me to understand you?”

The beliefs are always going to get us into trouble! (laughs) I remember the bumper sticker that said, “Don't believe everything you think!” In a way it's saying, your mind and your usual way [don’t] have it together.

My experiences with fundamentalists that have been good experiences have happened when I've said to those brothers, (sisters weren’t much among them), I said to them: “Let's not talk about the difference between the church in Jerusalem, and the church in Greece and in Rome, and about the Jews of that time, [etc.]. Let's talk about today.”

You love God; I love God. [So for example,] do you think the book of Psalms is a good book to study? And then we sit down and we study the book of Psalms together. They can take any translation they want and I go back to the original Hebrew. And the thing is getting to be so good, because they have a ta’am (taste), they have a feeling: this is the word of God.

When you get to the place where you study [a sacred text] in such a way, you become a lot softer. Because then those holy words are not slogans.

Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the difference between faith and belief? Can you share a personal story of a time you got a taste of the sacred? What helps you want to study over being sure of what you know?

Belief becomes faith when it is acted upon by works. Faith is a noun and it is only needed to be the size of a mustard seed but it must be exercised in Christ not in nature and not in some random belief of nature the cosmos or the universe.

I'm sure the knowing of the indigenous people that all is sacred is deeper than belief or faith. It's an abiding in. I hope they continue to have it after 'first contact'.

Ahhhh! The taste of the sacred. Being in nature and feeling safe and supported by beauty, Feeling my place in the web of life. Knowing I am blessed with abundance, always enough and more. Remembering the perfect parents that I have. Gathering with my community to sing and dance. And though I know , I always enjoy studying and learning more. Knowing that I am the creator of my experience and one hundred percent responsible for what I feel. Opening to the myriad of sensations in joy of being alive and sharing my joy and my grief. I believe only what I directly experience and have faith that peace and safety are possible now for all beings.

Beliefs was handed over down to us, it is prone to doubts, but faith is a KNOWING, an experiential knowledge never prone to doubts.

Faith is like fresh clean water in nature. Beliefs are like bottled water by different companies.

Faith is like a strong tree rooted in solid ground. It is firm and steady. Belief is like a fragile leaf blown away by the touch of strong wind. Faith is like an anchor that keeps us grounded and balanced. Beliefs are like clouds. They float around and change. Faith is like the clear sky. My beliefs change as I age. Faith is changeless.
I may believe in someone for some time in some situations but disbelieve in other situations. I have faith in my folks and friends who love me unconditoinally and selflessly. I also love people who help others selflessly, who relate to others without any strings of self-will and selfishness. This is Karma Yoga, a divine way of living. I trust them, respect them, and bow to them. Living this way fills the cup of my life with deep satisfaction, contentment, serenity, and bliss.
May we all cultivate the divine way of living, living truthfully, faithfully and gracefully!
Namaste!

"Belief and doubt are equal terms. You believe when you do not know." Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathy.

Does knowing come before faith? Or, does faith promote knowing? Does knowing arise from experience? I have more questions than any answer. For me personally, my faith has grown through life experiences which became the seeds of my knowing, ever unfolding into a deeper faith which in turn grounds my knowing as my Truth.

What I have found is Faith is an internal trait which has been personally experienced or a confidence in the strength of the laws of nature . Belief is the external trait or something which has been told to us though our elders or through our religious texts.
During corona , we had formed a group wherein we started reading Vinoba texts . The texts were so inspiring and our knowledge started improving. The turning point came ( It is still continuing) when we actually started internalising the values and even started trying and living upto those values.
Sometimes our prior knowledge or a belief in something actually prevents us from going deeper and exploring it further. If we can rise above our beliefs and get into the depth of what is actually being said and then actually experience it and after that internalize them .

Faith is like roots of a tree. It is firm and steady, unwavering. Belief is like aleaf of a tree. It gets swept away by external forces and change colors according to seasons. Faith is like an anchor that keeps me grounded, steady and balanced in the midst of small and big changes in me life. Beliefs change as they are do not have firm roots. I may believe in some body in certian sit but not in all situations. I may believe in some one for some time and disbelieve and doubt at other times.
I have faith in people in my life who love me unconditionally with no strings attached. I love folks in my life who serve people selflessly. This is divine way of living in this world. I have unwavering faith in them. And when I love them unconditionally they have faith in me. This is the divine way of living. and living this way fills the cup of my life joyfully and spiritually.
May we all cultivate the divine way of living, living truthfully and faithfully.

The difference for me is that faith is deeper than belief. Belief is cognitive, and faith is more than cognitive, it's bodily or experiential. Belief is in my brain, and faith is in my being. My faith for a long time now is that all creation is God in form, so all creation, living and not living, is sacred. I often don't live and act that faith, so I guess my faith is weak, but when I live it I get a taste of the sacred, and then it is the taste of the sacred that strengthens my faith. What helps me want to study over is my knowing very little for sure, my wanting to know more, my wanting to see more clearly, and the satisfaction I feel in learning.

Thanks for sharing Dr.Doane. "Belief is in my brain, and faith is in my being."
In my understanding faith leans more on trust (trustfulness) a power coming from insight as a gift (genetic?) and when i live it i get a taste of gratefulness.

Faith is the foundation of life in scular life as well as in spiritual life. Faith is an anchor that keeps me steady, centered, and balanced.
