True Meditation Has No Direction

But surely relaxing into awareness, into listening etc is a goal in itself. So to advocate goal-less meditation we also need to acknowledge the insoluable paradox involved. Trying not to have a goal is a subtle new goal. Trying not to try not to have a goal takes it meta step on in an infinite regress and so on. At some point we become so exhausted/bored with this round that surrender just happens - but not because we willed it so.

I practice chi gong standing meditation. Balance on my feet allowing my body its natural self corrections to maintain a body at ease. Then I open my being to the awareness of ALL. Soft focus of eyes help to quiet the mind. If I'm talking ... I'm not listening. I listen with all of me with not expectation of anything .. just feeling and feeling and feeling awareness with allowing whatever presents to be experienced without any commentary. I listen and feel for the energy flows, for other beings ... or as I think of myself as a particle among a myriad infinite number of other particles. Feeling for the wave(s). Am I particle or a wave? I'm stuck in particle for now, and experience whatever from that point of view.

It feels like true meditation leads to a true life.
It's like taking a bath in the purity of our own essence. First you dip a toe in and feel the water, it's nice, really nice, then you submerge yourself a little further and then a little further still until you find yourself embodied with complete awareness of who you've been all along. Then you relax with this presence of yourself while living, breathing, and experiencing each and every moment forward. :)

I have many distractions around my head area in meditation...a circle of events and situations non related to my life at present. I sense though with this happening ,this circle is like the rings around the planet Saturn just going around and around . In all of this... is just being and a knowledge that it may all disappear and then nothing one day. I don't strive for this ,but just BE in the BEING and aware of the circles of events playing out .

The trying gets in the way of being awareness, and true meditation is being awareness which is without trying and has no predetermined direction or goal.

The goal of meditation is to meditate. There is no end to meditate toward or for, but the goal is an ongoing flow akin to being in a flowing river but not aware or sensing being wet but being in the flow, in the current. This awareness is not something one works toward; the awareness arises from within and emerges outward as I let go of awareness. It may be more related to a concurrence where I am in agreement or harmony or equanimity with the flow or current of life about me. I experienced it significantly once as I sat in my car listening to a musical piece. I paused as I was to go and purchase lunch. In my pause I saw/heard/felt the wind blowing the trees in front of me; I saw a hawk swoop to attempt to capture a squirrel; and I was aware of my mother-in-law who was dying at that time. I was aware of being in the flow of life changing, living and dying, and felt a deepened sense of awe, a loving awe, arise. I felt that awe again while standing on a ledge in the Badl...  Last night I attended the “Wednesday” that went with this reading and had something to share, but then balked and simply passed when the mic came to me.  It’s sort of an irony - the share was to be about how I’ve found it increasingly difficult to share in recent months.

I’d been feeling bad about that, but in retrospect, this reading and the ensuing comments suggested a new interpretation. Though I’ve always pretty much been a left brain-dominant person, after attending Wednesdays for several years, the experience for me is less and less about the words and more and more about simply *being* with you all.

Not that words are unimportant, but they are simply pointers to reality (and often crude ones at that). Lately, just give me the reality.

Thank you, Rajnikant. It is the first time I hear of Syadvad and what it says makes a lot of sense to me. I must remember to pray each day for steadfastness in my practice of watchfulness and inner strength to withstand those things I find difficult to cope with. It is true that such an attitude as the one recommended is the only one helpful. I am coming to realize that there is absolutely no sense and no benefit in opposing other viewpoints and asserting my own. This includes being somewhat judgmental as regard to people that do not share my interest for inquiring into consciousness. In a sense what this philosophy recommends is profound humility. A humility based on the realization that each one is at a different stage of development. Of course any serious teaching will recommend the same for the reason that that the other is fundamentally not different from me in his/her vulnerability. An easy thing to forget. Thank you for this helpful reminder. ... View full comment

The passage is really excellent. It has described so clearly how ultimately one can achieve Awareness  returning to its non-state of absolute unmanifest potential, the silent abyss beyond all knowing. Each individual is unique, incomparable and indefinable. Also people have different levels of energy, capacity and inclinations and cannot be expected to practice the discipline in equal strength. In addition the degrees or levels and stages of spiritual insight and attainment also matters. The spiritual path has novices, beginners, newcomers and learners as well as those who have more experience and understanding – seasoned in their journey. There are also a number of diverse pathways to the Divine, indeed, each person’s path is unique. Hence the understanding and absorption of the passage also varies depending on the individuals. Generally people come to the meditative life and practices seeking solutions to so many different problems. Want a variety of things fr... View full comment

It is always a pleasure to discover a few new Sanskrit words such as 'arta' and 'raudra' where we find the root of the English words 'rude', 'rogue', etc. Often unknown to ourselves our Indian heritage is present in the words and structures of our modern European languages. To be aware that we create binds, attachments, for ourselves through suffering, jealousy and greed is at least a beginning. That awareness creates a movement towards inner freedom which I would'nt call a goal but rather a drive.

Dear Bijaybhai  very rightly said. In this Kali Yuga where there is no oneness of mind, body and speech it is very difficult to comprehend. That is why we need a Gyani as stated by Krishna Bhagwan who can lead the way. As I wrote earlier the Gyani or the Vitrage Scientist has stated that we are in one of the four meditation state all the time and if we understand them then we will understand how karmas are created and how they are discharged.

The description of "true meditation" in this article cannot be comprehended by human beings in general.  Only those who have made some progress toward achieving a meditative state, even if for brief moments, can get an understanding of what this article describes.  Normally, human beings need to set goals and follow directions to make any progress toward a state when they can get an understanding of what this article describes.  Even Buddha had a goal when he left his kingdom and searched for the right direction for achieving his goal for many years before he finally found what he was looking for.  Is there anyone who is born with the understanding of "true meditation" let alone experiencing it? I am sure there are some people, but understandably very rare.

I remember being at  a transcendental meditation seminar with 35 others "strangers" sitting around the table together. We were asked to meditate and during my meditation I was unaware of the presence of anyone else until I opened my eyes. Thoughts  come and go randomly at first  and then there is the silence.  It is wonderful.

I don't think this passage means that one should have no goal and no direction, that one should deny the role of the intellect. There is a place for all this. But I think it means that meditation is an inquiry into the nature of the one mind, where all thoughts originate, whether yours or mine, traditional or not traditional., inefficient or efficient, futile or purpose oriented. What is the state of the mind when it is not identified with any thought? Is it different from silence and is silence different from beauty? When does one best see  the great beauty present in nature? Can there be depth and beauty in the field of relationships or must there always be struggle. I think all this is part of  meditation and I think meditation proceeds through endless observation and questioning. I may be wrong but this is what I understand Raja Yoga to be.

Excellent article. Awareness is the key aspect especially who is aware of what. Based on Holistic science i.e. Vitrag Vignan one needs to know who am I from a Gyani Purush and then this awareness becomes really meaningful. The seer and knower needs to be separate from the function of the body. Really one is in a meditative state all the time in the thought process in any of the four ways. 1. Arta  Dhyan - Painful to one self i.e. worrying, feeling sorry, etc..2.  Raudra Dhyan - when you think of snatching happiness of others by hurting their egos thru anger, pride, maya & deceit, greed. 3. Dharma Dhyan - state of peace & tranquility in all situation. 4. Shukla dhyan - to be conscious that "I am the Pure Soul". These 4 states are the binding karmas for the next life. Any other meditation done is by the body itself and the results in gain in body functions in the present life which is definately useful but  NOT for  the ultimate... View full comment

 Dear Rajanikant, Greetings!

Dear Divine Brother,
Greetings!
The very first sentence or the title of this small essay - 'True Meditation Has No Direction or Goal' from Adyashanti disturbs me.
If no goal then why should we do that effort and waste our time and energy (mental energy)?
And if no direction, no method, no knowledge where this piece leads you to? - the silent abyss beyond all knowing. - Isn't that the aim of author's efforts?

In Raj-yoga meditation has a specific direction and aim. It is based on Mind & Intellect, two powers of soul. Mind is a creative faculty of the soul. It creates thoughts, if there is no control on mind, it will create thoughts aimlessly. You may be sitting in front of God or deity or in temple, church or Gurudwara and it (Mind) can wander in any direction. Letting it lose can pollute the atmosphere sooner or later as people are under the influence of negativity.
Intellect is like compass and can monitor, focus and concentrate the direction of thoughts towards the aim. So, in meditation aim and direction is essential if you want to attain some tangible results. Otherwise you will enjoy interrupted silence and at the end of meditation you will conclude how peaceful I passed the time!
'Passing the time' is not the aim of meditation. Collection of pieces of interrupted silence & Peace amongst different voices in mind is not an idea of meditation. Meditation should give us (inner) power to withstand any pressure of life, develop virtues like power of peace, purity, love etc. leave us enlightened and in the state of bliss (Sat-chit-anand swarup). It should develop the intuitive energy. It should give us an experience of very deep state of silence.
Otherwise what is the idea of doing True (sat!) meditation?
Think over it.

 Dear Divine brother Prakash,

After all  the 4 yogas, what does Ved say? "This in not it, this is not it, this is not". Krishna Bhagwan says "Go to a Gyani" and he will show you sat-sit-anand. All the physical work done thru body will benefit the body and not the chetan by virtue of the process.

To me, "being awareness," means being one with pure awareness, that is, with no purpose or goal, no attachment, no trying to control, no manipulation.  I have only very brief moments of being awareness, and then I attach to some thought or concern or fantasy which takes me out of being awareness.  Attempting to get to true meditation means I have a goal that I am trying to get to, and having a goal that I am trying to get to is a problem.  It's not being awareness.  It is trying to get to true meditation rather than being true meditation.  The trying gets in the way of being awareness, and true meditation is being awareness which is without trying and has no predetermined direction or goal.  I believe that in true meditation I only know the direction looking back in hindsight. I only know where I have been and not where I am going.  If I have a predetermined direction or destination that I am trying to get to, I'm not in true meditation.  ... View full comment

Unless one has inquired into meditation with the help of those who have made it into an art and a way of living it is very common to see  silence as the doorway to some ultimate state. This is the essence of seeking and seeking implies one has a goal, a direction. Adyashanti says in another, closely related passage: 'Sitting in silence is not a goal. The goal of sitting is not to attain silence. There is just sitting in silence and recognizing yourself  to be the silence...But if I seek silence as an object, as a state I am trying to sustain, it means I am still seeing silence as an object, as something different from me.' J. Krishnamurti made a very similar answer to someone somewhat stuck with seeking something beyond silence. His answer was: ' Can silence listen to silence in silence? '.  Both these statements make it very clear that meditation has neither goal nor direction. When this is clear, when one is not attempting to get somewhere one can, tentatively, '...  Fantastic. Adyashanti's  statement says it all.  To paraphrase Thomas Keating: "The universe's first language is silence. All else is a poor translation." The only personal experience I can share is occasionally, actually very rarely, and only within the last year, have I noticed an exceptional peacefulness when I am just being aware with no goals or desires. I have not experienced being no one going nowhere but that is perhaps another way of saying being awareness. This unusual peacefulness was experienced after about 22 years of meditation. Meditation may be thought of as the M-word since any attempts to describe or explain it or not..  Being no one going nowhere I expect is a fine way to experience being awareness/peacefulness. There is no need to reconcile anything other than noticing many paradoxes exist when attempting to intellectualize being awareness. Thanks for the opportunity to respond. Warm and kind regards to everyone. I just read to watch again Obam... View full comment

When we try to define anything, that is try to put it in words, we miss its essence. We are left with its dry shell.
This what happens to meditation.
We can neither meditate nor define it.
Meditation/Dhyan happens when we become like a statue for a while, doing nothing, not even observing.
We then come to realise what is happening, why is it happening, who is making it happen. All this is so very personal. All generalisation are a crude mockery.
All that I am saying may be complete nonsense.
