Rest and Be Taken

When there is deep abundance
there is nowhere to abide.
There is nowhere to rest
or grasp onto
and yet there is rest

The sky abides
yet it never rests.
Neither can we say that
the sky is not always at rest.
We talk about the sky
as if it were something
as if it actually exists -
and yet we cannot say that
the sky does not exist.
The sky is nothing but
coming and going.

Everything is perfectly spontaneous.
The coming and going arise mutually
instantaneously.
If the true I is asleep
you will miss the point entirely
and you will continue to dwell
in the world of opposites.

So see the two as one
and the one as empty
and be liberated
within the world of duality.

At first it seems
as if begoing follows becoming.
But look even closer
and you will see
that there are only
flashes of lightning
illuminating the empty sky.

Life and death
becoming and begoing
are only words.
In order to save your life
you must see that you die
instantaneously
moment to moment
instant to instant.

Now where are you going to abide?
And where are you not abiding already?

Indeed there is nowhere
to rest your head
and there is nothing but rest.
So let go of all ideas
about permanence and impermanence
about cause and effect
and about no cause and no effect.
All such notions are dualistic concepts.

The Truth of what you are
is completely beyond all duality
and all notions of non-duality,
and yet it includes duality
and non-duality alike.
Like an ocean
that is both waves and stillness
and yet un-definable
as waves or stillness.

The truth of being
cannot be grasped by ideas
or experiences.
Both waves and stillness
are the manifest activity
of your own self.
But self cannot be defined
by its activity
nor by its non-activity.
The truth is
all-transcendent
ungraspable, all-inclusive
and closer than your own skin.

A single thought about it
obscures its essence.
The perfume of true life
is right in your nose.
There is nothing you can do
to perceive it
and yet you must do something.
I say:
Rest and be taken.
Rest and be taken.

Frankly, I am literally challenged and find it difficult to catch a creative worker’s mind. However, following is my effort to decipher these stanzas. Excuse me for the naivety in understanding them. When there is deep abundance there is nowhere to abide. There is nowhere to rest or grasp onto and yet there is rest the sky abides yet it never rests.1. When there is a problem of abundance, I would choose the first opportunity that suits me. This may deny me the possibility of grasping even better opportunity and brand me a personality devoid of ambitions. I accept it and justify myself settling for concurrent safe and comfortable status rather than unknown and scary future glory. The Pigeon Hole Principle is what I am indicating. A pigeon selects first available whole for itself among the abundant holes available. It positions its face towards the opening to observe where its fellow pigeons are settling. It makes sounds to alert and direct them to settle around the holes immediately... View full comment

What we think and feel and the way we behave, the kind of choices we make is largely governed by our basic equation with the environment. Most of us have one of two positions on this;1. we hold the environment as a threat.2. we hold the environment as a partner an ally, even as an extension of ourselves. There is always a third group which is neither here nor there, sometimes here and at other times there, always oscillating. If we hold the first position then our reaction to the environment is the fight-flight mode. If we can't do either we surrender or play the waiting game.. This leads to the fiercely active mode. We have to fight and work hard. We cannot afford to rest. We have to use all possible tricks to fool the enemy  to wil. So camoflague, subterfuge, masks, untruth, cover ups, masks are all accepted and recommended strategies. We have to keep pushing on relentlessly. We cannot give up.  The language will be loaded with superlatives. If we subscribe to the second ... View full comment

I'm not going to lie I do not understand this thought at all.  I heard the thought once and read it again, but I'm still in the dark.  I did enjoy the insights of other people and they particularly made me reflect on the role of silence in my life.  Not so much silence of the mind as connected to meditation, but silence of the surroundings as it affects our experience in a particular moment.

The Essence, the Light, the Fire that can be said to be Me, Self, Consciousness, is always watchful, always moving, always present, always everywhere or nowhere.  The vessel, the earth suit, that houses this Divine, needs rest, sustainance, stillness, and breath to fully appreciate the experience of being alive at this moment, and this moment, and this moment...

Silence opens up the world to me. I never practiced silence until about 2 years ago. Practice of silence since then has been a regular part of life since it makes me peaceful, gives space and opening for new beautiful thoughts and realisations. I know myself, my interactions and understand others much better now and am able to choose what is important to me and live in the moment many times now.

Being at rest gives strength and true happiness. The journey to be at rest always is an ultimate destination for the seeker.

Thank you so much Somik for the opportunity to respond.  When I hear the word "rest" I think of peacefulness.  When one is peaceful, one has the right values.  When one has right values, one has right understanding, right thoughts, right speech, right action, right  livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. The above was written before I read the beautiful, "My Secret of Silence,"  After reading it I am pleased to say I do not know.  I am also pleased I  do not know.  I am reminded of the ancient sage who said something to the effect that if we are not enlightened, a thousand books will not be enough.  If we are wise and/or enlightened, one word is already too much. When I hear "be taken" I think of letting go.  We too, "are nothing but coming and going."   Letting go of desires and who I am and flow with living as a river flows tothe sea is the "... A single thought about it obscures its essence.
...      There is nothing you can do to perceive it and yet you must do something.

This morning while meditation, the above insight flashed through my mind as a picture while yearning to "see" the Self.  I sensed the above - that single thought - that yearning would "produce" nothing.  Instead, if I just would be with all in all, then I would not be staring at the heavens seeking stars, I would perceive them all around and catch an unexpected glimpse out of my peripheral vision. And, there was peace and rest as I floated, instead of working so hard to swim in the right direction.

Yes... This is thought provoking and opens up ‘mind thought’ on;‘Motionless silence is the stillness of immortality’ = ‘Universal Oneness’I lived through an illness not so long ago, and I didn’t accept death- I embraced death as a part of me, By doing this, my life, my world and my idea of intellect and humility changed, It changed from a perceived ways of someone else’s education, someone else’s expectations put onto a life...  None of those tags, attachments, or labels is a reality, or a duality. My lesson:The true ‘I’ is the ‘true self’ and that self is the ‘Journey’I see this;I can see the moon through the pollution, hazes and ozone layers very clearlyI can see the sun clearly through its blistering heat But, at times - I don’t see where I am right ‘now’ So, it’s very accurate and fair to say ‘Rest and Be Taken’ As we are comple... Beautiful..Many times, when I'm under open skies with plants and trees, the distinction between working and resting disappears for hours together. Also reminds me of a friend who used to say  with a wink "I don't want to rest and rust because I'm always at rest".
