True collective action can take place only when you, the individual, who are also the mass, are awake and take the full responsibility for your action without compulsion.
These words are the ones I live by consciously. I have chosen to speak up and interrupt hurtful and harmful acts. I will always be the the one even if i am the only one speaking up. I have made that commitment to all living things. The phrases, "I'm only one person, what can I do, or "that's just they way it is." Are not true.

First and foremost is to find out "who am I ?"Settlement into this pure, powerful and peaceful original self, connects us with the ONE source seed of which collectively we all are just branches. This awakened intelligence is the secret of a successful mass movement. Gandhiji is the best example. An earnest- burning desire-longing together with honest hard work and persistent efforts may be the starting point for a true fulfillment.

The alchemy of transformation may lie in the alternating repetition of observing the outside and the inside on the clarified mirror of our consciousness. We see things in the world we find upsetting, disconcerting, not in alignment with our deepest values-- which themselves are often aspirational rather than truly embodied. In witnessing this, we recoil against it, saying "that's not me". If we have the discipline to take a deep hard look on the inside, we find all the garbage, horror, and ugliness that we revile in the world also hiding in the shadows of our mind and heart. Then we must have the courage to say to all that we abhor "yes, that's me". Like an outgoing breath exhaling "not me, not me" coupled with the inhaling breath of "i am that, that is me", the space of stillness at the crossroads of exhalation and inspiration is where the mind settles into a place beyond knowing-- where we have no choice but to bow if our eyes have open... For me, deep, inward, voluntary change means to let go of conditioning and illusions, to use Krishnamurti's word, and change from deep within myself to be myself, embrace my individuality, and be my own real person. I've been fortunate to be a part of several groups in which we worked together in collective action while I simultaneously was awake and being my real self, free, acting without compulsion. There was true togetherness of we and there was individuality of I, and the we and the I supported one another. What helps me awaken the desire for true and intelligent fulfillment within me is an experience that challenges and provokes me to be myself. What helps me awaken the desire is that the experience of true and intelligent fulfillment is fulfilling, for me and typically for the other. It is its own reward and awakens in me the desire for more.

My favorite line here, David: "What helps me awaken the desire for true and intelligent fulfillment within me is an experience that challenges and provokes me to be myself." You were made to BE yourself! Be him/her!

Internal change and external change are interconnected. If I focus my energy in participating in the mass movement or collective action blindly and compulsively, I will not be the true participant or agent of change. The change will be on the surfaceand superficial. The wheel of suffering will continue. Deep, true, inward, and voluntary change happens when I deeply, honestly, intelligentlyand freely explore what fundamentally needs to be changed and how I can be an active and dynamic part of this change. Deep and lasting change takes place when there is an alignmentamong Head-intelligent, honest and clear thinking, Heart-love, courage, and compassion, and Hand- action. The three H's need be harmony-the fourth H. I recall two mass movements in which I had participated-one in India and the other in the USA. The first mass movement was the freedom movement called Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi. It was based on two fundamental principles: Truth and Non-violence. It became a national ... View full comment
