Interbeing

Emptiness does not mean nothingness. Saying that we are empty does not mean that we do not exist. No matter if something is full or empty, that thing clearly needs to be there in the first place. When we say a cup is empty, the cup must be there in order to be empty. When we say that we are empty, it means that we must be there in order to be empty of a permanent, separate self.

About thirty years ago I was looking for an English word to describe our deep interconnection with everything else. I liked the word “togetherness,” but I finally came up with the word “interbeing.” The verb “to be” can be misleading, because we cannot be by ourselves, alone. “To be” is always to “inter-be.” If we combine the prefix “inter” with the verb “to be,” we have a new verb, “inter-be.” To inter-be and the action of interbeing reflects reality more accurately. We inter-are with one another and with all life.

There is a biologist named Lewis Thomas, whose work I appreciate very much. He describes how our human bodies are “shared, rented, and occupied” by countless other tiny organisms, without whom we couldn’t “move a muscle, drum a finger, or think a thought.” Our body is a community, and the trillions of non-human cells in our body are even more numerous than the human cells. Without them, we could not be here in this moment. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to think, to feel, or to speak. There are, he says, no solitary beings. The whole planet is one giant, living, breathing cell, with all its working parts linked in symbiosis.

We can observe emptiness and interbeing everywhere in our daily life. [...] Looking into the child, we can be in touch with her parents and ancestors, but equally, looking into the parent, we can see the child. We do not exist independently. We inter-are.

Everything relies on everything else in the cosmos in order to manifest—whether a star, a cloud, a flower, a tree, or you and me.

Every time I offer incense or prostrate before the altar in my hermitage, I do not do this as an individual self but as a whole lineage. Whenever I walk, sit, eat, or practice calligraphy, I do so with the awareness that all my ancestors are within me in that moment. I am their continuation. Whatever I am doing, the energy of mindfulness enables me to do it as “us,” through interbeing, not as “me.” When I hold a calligraphy brush, I know I cannot remove my father from my hand. I know I cannot remove my mother or my ancestors from me. They are present in all my cells, in my gestures, in my capacity to draw a beautiful circle. Nor can I remove my spiritual teachers from my hand. They are there in the peace, concentration, and mindfulness I enjoy as I make the circle. We are all drawing the circle together.

Seed Questions for Reflection

What does Interbeing mean to you? Can you share a personal story of a time you were deeply aware of a giant 'all' participating in action through you? What helps you remember the entire lineage that lives through you?

I sit here in the unemployment office , I feel lost in this place, it's been more than 30 years since I have not had a job, so I'm looking for one, I keep breathing, grounding and know we are all in this boat together.

I remember the special time that I was privileged enough to learn calligraphy from a Master. It was a small community class. Together we learned how to prepare the ink, to set the paper,
to sit and breathe properly, and to hold the brush. I'll never forget learning how to hold the brush! I was so excited, while at the same time feeling a calm security. The instruction from this Master came to me as if from a whole council of ancestors, present and lovingly guiding my hand. Finally when I was ready to lower the correctly held brush to the paper, I made a perfect circle and felt an overwhelming connection to all those that have gone before me, and those that sat near me, and also those that I would show my work in the future. It was an unforgettably warm and fuzzy feeling!

We are we. That is the moving story of our lives. We were never alone or solitary. We were and are and always be connected to all that lives and moves and even to all that flows and grows. So, a great reminder that we are nature and nature is not apart from us or over there. It is here, within and without. There is no separation. We have to and should want to take care of our world. We are the earth and we live on through nature.

Closely related to "interbeing" is the concept of "dependent co-arising". All that happens is from a mix of all the factors that make up the present moment.

This is so huge for me. In my daily struggles with food addiction, I’ve searched for a bigger reason to love & honor this amazing body of mine. This is it. Thank you🙏♥️

Stewart was nineteen years old when it happened. It was mid August, 1990, and he was staying at his parents' home on a break from college, where he had just written a paper for a final exam in a Philosophy of Mind course at UCDavis. He had just finished reading "Lord of the Flies" that morning, and turned on the radio before stepping into the shower. Once in the shower, he heard the sound of the water falling, but also could hear the radio, as if they were two completely different sounds. But then he realized that his eardrums don't differentiate between the sound of the music and talk on the radio and the sounds of the shower water raining down on him—but that that differentiation had to come from his understanding after his eardrums registered the vibrations; it was some sort of conditioned differentiation. He wondered whether, as a baby or a very young child, if he could "hear" the difference of the sounds as coming from two different sources, and reasoned that he likely would not... View full comment

Dear Genoveva Dimcheva, please know that you are deserving of love as we all are. I see you and recognize your pain. Look within yourself and find that love that you have to share with others. In that, you will find connection to all beings in some way and you will find peace. Know that we are all human and perhaps may not live up to your expectations but in that, know that you can find compassion for them and for yourself. You are a beautiful soul here for a purpose. I wish you peace and lovingkindness. Namaste~🙏🏼

With pluto (symbolising transformation) in the sign of Aquarius (symbolising community) being reminded of 'interbeing' feels profound. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.
I am not alone, I am always accompanied :) I do not have to struggle alone seems very uplifting in this moment.

To me, interbeing means what Thich Nhat Hanh says, that we cannot be by ourselves alone and separate from everything else. I agree that every thing is linked and that every thing relies on every thing else. I agree that each person is a continuation of his ancestors, and we are all together. There is no individual without the whole. How one is depends on all the rest. I wouldn't be me without everyone and everything that makes up the whole of which I am part. My awareness has grown that existence is a giant all that participates in action through me and each of us. I occasionally approach being deeply aware of that, and I am awed. One strong and sometimes shocking reminder of the entire lineage that I am continuous with is when I see physical or behavioral or personality features that are like my ancestors.

To be is always to "inter-be. This is good awakening call for me. It is a guiding star for me. We are all connected with each other. We do not have a seperate existence. We are intrinsically coneected not only with other human beings but also with animals and with nature. We are an intrinsic part of the whole. We do not have an independet and isolated existence. We are connected with each other and we all are one. I was born by the union of two different human beings having two different identiies. For creating a new person in their life, they got united with each other and created a unified identity. I was raised in a family in which we felt deeply connected with each other. I never felt lonely. That was my experience and it built the foundation of my identity. Though we were relatively poor but we had inner abundance. I am grateful for receiving such precious gift coming from their hearts. There have been times when I have missed the steps of living as an interbeing person. Livi... View full comment

I like imagining a permeable circle, arms length around my body. My future generations stand in front of me, my kids, their kids - or it could be nieces , nephews or any young people you have connected to. Behind me are my ancestors gently supporting with a hand on my back, my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents etc . To my left are my friends & contemporaries who travel life with me and to my right are my teachers who guide me. Above my head and all around is my higher power, my spiritual belief , my higher self interconnected with all and below is Mother Earth , grounding me and connecting me to all nature. This brings me comfort and a great sense of interbeing and interconnected , alone with are very small, connected we are infinite.
