Freedom is the option of choosing. Perfect freedom is to make a choice aligned with nature. We are free to both destroy and to build. Choose wisely.

Choice is an illusion. We have no free will.

It made me think in this idea of nonduality and oneness the conversation seems to fall into this frame. Either all is one and there is only consciousness OR there really are parts (cells, people, rocks, etc..) that just connect through energy, information and perhaps otherways. (A perineal dialogue in so many cultures over many centuries) My thoughts is perhaps this is NOT a useful conversation and perhaps just a distraction of sorts a bit like the chicken or egg. Each can be a valid story duality and nonduality AND even this journey so many mystics take for transcendent experiences where one class is the dissolving of the "I" into the "One" while perhaps fascinating and inspirational is just a side show. The more challenging and fruitful one is to have the deep connections with FLOW of what is, NOT the QUESTION of IS Oneness TRUE. (And can I taste it via meditation, yoga, psychedelics, etc..) I see the FLOW state is the deepest alignment with the systems, people... View full comment

It would read much better if the pronouns were not so patriarchal.

Alan Watts lived a while ago thus his language reflects that.

I very much like this essay by Alan Watts. He was a wise man. By living in harmony with nature, we are in service to it and it serves us. We are in no way it's master. Imagine being in a stream -- there is perfect freedom in going with the flow. We are in the world and cosmic stream of nature, and there is perfect freedom in going with the flow, accepting that we are a part of it, not apart from it. We are composed of the same stuff of which it is composed, and affected by all the same forces that affect it. To attempt to isolate from it or fight it or try to control or exploit it is foolish. The fact is I am in union with nature, and to go against it or try to isolate from it is to be anti-nature, and the result of that for me as an individual or for us as a society is unhappiness, sickness, and death. I've grown over time in my sense of union with nature, and it has resulted in my being more compassionate and at peace.

We are relational beings. We have relationships with human beings as well as with nature. We are a part of nature, not apart from nature. We are composed of five fundamental natural elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space. Theses are gifts of nature. Without these five blessings of nature, we cannot be born or survive. How do we relate to nature? With awe, wonder and gratitude? In union with nature? In the spirit of service? When we relate to nature with an attitude of deep gratitude, we become guardians and servants of nature. We feel freedom with no fright of fear, isolation, or alienation. As I was growing up, my parents used relational and divine words for nature such as Surya Narayanafor sun as manifestation of divinity. For moon, Chandra mama- our maternal uncle and earth as Dharati mata-Mother Earth. Thus my attitude towards nature has always been of service and worship and deep connection. When I relate to nature as a divine source of life giving energy, I feel deeply, free... View full comment

Dear JD,
What a beautiful reflection of your youth! I wholeheartedly agree and see our divisive mentally in our present culture very much because of our separation of the other and of God. As technology evolves, it seems, for the most part, that we are more isolated from nature. Nature is inherently who we are and keeps us grounded and unified.
I am a student of Ayurveda and resonate with your reflection! Thank you
