Slavery To The Senses

We are all slaves to our senses, slaves to our own minds, conscious and subconscious. The reason why a criminal is a criminal is not because he desires to be one, but because he has not his mind under control and is therefore a slave to his own conscious and subconscious mind, and to the mind of everybody else. He must follow the dominant trend of his own mind; he cannot help it; he is forced onward in spite of himself, in spite of his own better promptings, his own better nature; he is forced to obey the dominant mandate of his own mind. Poor man, he cannot help himself.

We see this in our own lives constantly. We are constantly doing things against the better side of our nature, and afterwards we upbraid ourselves for so doing and wonder what we could have been thinking of, how we could do such a thing! Yet again and again we do it, and again and again we suffer for it and upbraid ourselves. At the time, perhaps, we think we desire to do it, but we only desire it because we are forced to desire it. We are forced onward, we are helpless! We are all slaves to our own and to everybody else's mind; whether we are good or bad, that makes no difference. We are led here and there because we cannot help ourselves. We say we think, we do. It is not so. We think because we have to think. We act because we have to. We are slaves to ourselves and to others.

Deep down in our subconscious mind, the great boundless ocean of subjective mind, [lie] all the thoughts and actions of the past. Each one of these is striving to be recognized, pushing outward for expression, surging, wave after wave, out upon the objective mind, the conscious mind. These thoughts, the stored-up energy, we classify as natural desires, talents, etc. But that is because we do not realize their true origin. We obey them blindly, unquestioningly; and slavery, the most helpless kind of slavery, is the result; and we call ourselves free. Free! We who cannot for a moment govern our own minds, nay, cannot hold our minds on a subject, focus it on a point to the exclusion of everything else for a moment! Yet we call ourselves free. Think of it! We cannot do as we know we ought to do even for a very short space of time. Some sense-desire will crop up, and immediately we obey it. Our conscience smites us for such weakness, but again and again we do it, we are always doing it. We cannot live up to a high standard of life, try as we will. The ghosts of past thoughts, past lives hold us down.

All the misery of the world is caused by this slavery to the senses. Our inability to rise above the sense-life -- the striving for physical pleasures -- is the cause of all the horrors and miseries in the world. [...] The mind uncontrolled and unguided will drag us down, down, for ever -- rend us, kill us; and the mind controlled and guided will save us, free us.

Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion of being bound to compulsive thought and compulsive action? Can you share an experience of a time you were able to act without being bound to your senses and thoughts? What helps you develop an intelligence that goes beyond the senses and thoughts?

Mind is extra powerful.we can't fight with him.but when it make negetive self talk ,make horrible future , destroy peace of mind, happiness, courage, hope, and make idle,we need a saviour.in Bible Jesus is the saviour,He save us from karma dosha&negetivity. His holy blood washed out all sins& exorcist evil from us,only for those who belive(no religion) can get healing,no such way of saving in any community i noticed.

"We think, because we 'have to' think." This is so true. In such a fast moving world, we can be easily driven or manipulated by the external factors like something#addictive. So when time comes to 'have to think'notion, we are somehow unsatisfied with the consequences of our past actions thus ends up with a plan of reprogramming ourselves, our actions and our thoughts.
The compulsive actions and thoughts doesn't need a single thought to go for. It's just happens habitually. Means we are not awared of as it's purely driven by our existing emotions.
Through meditation, challenging self and... many more one can go beyond one's senses and thoughts.

I don't agree at all. I think this is a very negative view on life, and it lacks nuance. I miss a word about "power".

I do not accept the dualism that is reflected in this thought of being a slave to my mind.
Where is the 'I' in the statement 'you are a slave to your own mind'? Why does my mind then not do good rather than evil as is projected here? What is good? You say following your own desires is not good, why? Maybe the evil is to try to form the mind into something it is not.
Whatever the case, I am my mind, I am my body, I am my soul. I don't have these things (dualism), I am these things. I have been forgiven in Christ Jesus and can now do the good I want. This gives you freedom to act and be yourself. It assumes the you are created in the image of God, 'And it was very good'.

Today, Canada searches for a man who killed, along with his brother, who he also murdered, thirteen people and injured 12 more. We call him a murderer and are on a manhunt for him. But Canada imprisoned his people in residential schools for generations, tore their heritage and dignity from them, and destroyed the deep bones of community. Just as my impulses and senses determine my choices, so do his, but we have a responsibility for the senses he experiences as we drove them deep into the soul of his people. The tragedy is his, the legacy is ours.

Emma, I think your response is well thought out, but not with the brain, with the heart. Society is sometimes responsible for creating "murderers". People like to call them evil, but we do not know what kind of hell that person has been through, and it is imperative we examine their life and have compassion. For every person has the ability to become a murderer, or anything else. Native people have survived genocide and many horrific things, and that means there is a lot of pain. Thank you for this heartfelt response.

The 'subconscious' is a theory of knowledge. But it is a contradiction in terms. Consciousness is to be conscious. There is no subconscious running things. Sometimes a pencil is really only a pencil.

Emme excuses all murders. Everything she said about this mass murderer could apply to anyone whatsoever, including those who call for justice. We are all just victims of our upbringing. The man who kills your children did not really mean to hurt anyone. The most merciful thing we could do for him is to put him out of his miseries as soon a possible.

Thank you to those who have responded. I am not excusing all murderers but I do think that what the article I posted notes is that we are defined by our experience and only those who have access to the resources to overcome trauma, or extraordinary inner strength, have the ability to process and develop apart from that trauma. Our societies do not provide the resources that might help individuals overcome the traumas of the past. That is a fact. Until we do, we cannot point to individuals and say they are the guilty parties. We are all guilty parties to the extent that we support governments that do not provide social supports, early childhood supports, social benefits like health care, childcare, food benefits, and well-funded public schools. The government representatives we support are the ones we think best serve our own interests but those interests should and must come to include the interests of others. That, in the long run, would be the most merciful thing we could do. Thank you, again, for engaging.

Of course the development of our reflective capacities play an enormous role in the realisation of how we are habitually preprogrammed, but for those who do not reflect or care to, they live and can be driven from the delusional bias of believing their thoughts feelings and even sense perceptions. I am often caught out by the tricks of the mind believing my thoughts to be real until I stop to breathe notice, to just be aware so that the one who is aware is not lost in herself as the thought. This article is fierce but true, but like all relative truths, it is also not true. Where there is awareness there is freedom from this delusion and we are all aware and so there is always that possibility of freedom for us all.

As a Narrative Therapy Practitioner and one with lived experiences of tge impact of traumas, I absolutely disagree with being a slave to our own mind and unable to help ourselves. What we become slaves to is layer upon layer of lived experiences and of external influences that teach us to be slaves. For example, a person born in poverty whose parents have relationship with drugs due to hopelessness which was caused by living in a society without safety nets and with greed which caused a small percentage of the population to consume much and which created the poverty in the first place and treats persons in poverty as if somehow their becoming a thief to survive is that person's fault. I do agree a person can become a slave to other's ideas about them as 'less than' and sometimes this then is internalized into their own mindset and thinking of 'worthless.' None of us is born into a vacuum, we are each impacted by the family we grew up in, gender/cultural/societal norms and Watson of... View full comment

Since the egoic self can only live in the cause-and-effect world of karma, every thought or action can be traced back to some conditioned cause; indeed, there is no freedom visible there (who is there to be free?) And if my ego is the only thing I see, then I can only ask my ego to control my mind (and off to meditation swamp I go!) Only when my egoic self then surrenders to the infinite Love and Truth that has always been (which then is no longer outside), then there is freedom for the larger awareness that thought it was only this ego.

To be bound to anything, including compulsive thought and action, is to be enslaved. I disagree with Vivekananda that we desire a thought or action because we are forced to desire it and we are helpless. We are conditioned by our world, and we often unknowingly develop habits, compulsions, and addictions which can be extremely difficult to break free of, but we aren't helpless, we have the ability to free ourselves. A person is not powerless, even if he or she says 'I can't'. Our sense-life and our ability to think and act are fine servants and terrible masters, and if we let them be masters we're in trouble. I don't always act without being bound, but I am able to, and when I accept that, I act freely. Learning from life experiences helps me develop an intelligence that goes beyond the sense and thoughts. I often don't free myself, but I know I can free myself. For the most part, 'I can't' is a lie, and 'I don't' or 'I won't' is the truth. What I spend my time thinking about... View full comment

My slavery or freedom depennds on the state of my mind. My mind binds me, my mind frees me. Who controls my sesnses and my thoughts and feelings? My mind. Who is driving my life? My mind or my senses? If and when I let my senses be my master, my sesnses will pull me down into the ditch of all kinds of pain and suffering, If I let my mind be the master, I will be able to make wise and right choices. And this way I will be free from my compulsive thoughts and actions. Have I fallen into the ditch and emotionally hurt myself and others close to me? You bet! Being a humanbeing I have fallem down and ethically done wrong things called sins for which I have paid the price for suffering. I have learned from my downfall and have learned how to rise up. I woke up from my dark and gloomy sleep. I am mindful of not repeating the same hurtful cycle of misery. There is always inner light for guidung me on the right path. I need to keep my inner eyes open. I need to remain awakened. What helps me... View full comment

Swami's Vivekanandas words are like arrows shot straight.
Thank you for sharing this reading.
What intrigues me experientially, is this line.
We who cannot for a moment govern our own minds, nay, cannot hold our minds on a subject, focus it on a point to the exclusion of everything else for a moment!
