Seed Questions for Reflection

What shifts in you when you consider the notion that the world moves "more like a forest floor" - where decay and emergence are inseparable, where endings quietly feed beginnings? Can you share a personal story of a time when something in your life came apart and, only later, revealed itself to be the ground from which something new was being woven? What helps you "inhabit the trembling" - to stay present at the threshold of uncertainty without reaching for false ground or turning away from what feels unfinished and alive?

When I consider that the world moves like a forest floor, I shift from seeing events as separate, visible, and in my control to seeing the source of events as mostly underground, that is, mostly out of sight and unknown to me, seeing events as interconnected in oneness, and to realizing little is in my control. I also shift from seeing decay and emergence, or ending and beginning, as separate and oppositional to seeing them as together and harmonious, with ending feeding beginning which feeds ending maybe ad infinitum. My interest in and commitment to one career path fell apart years ago with much inner anguish, trembling, and uncertainty which became the ground for a new career path which fit me and was satisfying for me. What helps me inhabit the trembling and my heart, my gut feelings and my inner voice is that I've learned to trust and value all of them and not dismiss, fight, or try to control them.

This article Where The Longest Light Meets The Gathring Dark authored by Shannon Willis is a timely article for me. I am 101 years old. In my relatively long life I have seen quite a few ups and downs, births and deaths. There are two ways of relating to the truth of dying: Accept it realistically and gracefully or deny it or resist it. We tend to forget it and deny it forgetting the truth that who is born is going to die. Birth and death are two wings of the bird of life. What is born is going to die. When my father was alive he taught us to keep this inevitable truth in mind, to accept it and live the best way we can. There are times when a thought passes through my mind : How long am I going to be on this earth? How am I going to die? I know the truth that whoever is born is going to die. I know this truth and l am trying to live my life by serving others to the best of my ability. Death is not in my hands, life is. I follow this truth and live accordingly. Knowing and accepting thi... View full comment

I just shared a story this morning in a writing group about being taken off my windsurfing boat via a big gust and that big wind resulted in a very serious hip injury. It took a few operations to return my body to an even gait And even as I dictate this, I am still aware of that wind over my right side 17 years later. What has switched or changed is that instead of being reminded of the destruction and disruption and dissolution and degradation that’s happening on the planet today that I actually had a lived experience, a personal physical set of years of personal experience,… A journey… A very hard work of physical rehab rehabilitation to regain a balanced gait. That fact continues to inform all of the recalibrations that I’m doing in my work with my writing and continuing to play with the concepts that are informing my work, embodying emergence and the Wayfinder’s Octave. Truth stacked upon truth to build awareness, Creativity action upon a sense of solid ground. It was a l... View full comment
