Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion that we can spend decades "seeing what we remembered was wrong" about something - or someone - rather than actually seeing them as they are now? Can you share a personal story of a moment when you suddenly saw yourself, or another person, with fresh eyes - past an old wound and into the fullness of what had grown in its place? What helps you return to the present reality of who you are, rather than the story of what was once broken?

Such a Beautiful Story and how lucky you are to have had the longevity with that tree! A short film or longer one would be beautiful to illustrate this story and your experience. My son was a boys boy and many teachers would ask questions like did he fall on his head? Does he have ADHD etc. As a woman I came to trust what others thought but luckily his father did not. Many people put him in a typical African American Boy Problem Box. He knew his letters numbers and colors before preschool at 4 years old. Then he started Kindergarten at 4 and 9 months among 5 year olds and 6 year olds in a class of 35! All of a sudden academics and social rules were a problem. He is fearless, loved to play and talk and was always in trouble. In middle school he played 4-5 instruments, was in debate club, boxing and wanted to do drama and other things. Fast forward, no graduating middle school due to a pandemic. Starting high school online, not his thing for an only child social butterfly. He became angr... View full comment

Tulip Poplar Tree is a very heart toching and inspiring story. We all go through ups and downs in life. Our body gets old. How do we realte to us when we get old. Our body changes. Our mind also changes. As I am getting old I am not able to do things that I used to do easily. I am blessed to have people in my life who take care of me. Life is a two-way street for me. I have friends and family members who help me when I ask for it. And I am happy to offer my my adivce when they ask for it. This way my life is not like a oneway street. I am grateful for having friends and family who take care of me and I am very to offer my help unconditionally.
I wish and hope that we extend our helping hands to people getting older and needing help.

Anais Nin said we don't see reality as it is, we see reality as we are. Part of what we are is what we remember, and if we remember what was wrong, we can easily see the wrong and not see the bigger picture and not see the positive of what is. I've often done that. A wound has sometimes been the first thing I see, and sometimes the only thing I see. When I see a wound now I usually see more than the wound, more of the whole person, and that's because I have become more positive, accepting, and open over the years, thank goodness. A wound isn't just negative. A wound shows that damage has occurred and some healing and maybe help is needed. I have developed fresh eyes that are better at seeing more of what is. I'm especially happy when I am of some help in healing the wound.

I loved this story! it resonates with how I see the world. I live on a small farm (2 1/2 acres) in Ipswich, MA. We rescue horses, chickens, ducks, roosters and dogs and I have an environmental landscape business. We live in a pine forest along with every conceivable wild animal and huge assortment of birds. My experience living this way has given me the understanding that there is resilience in all beings, including green plants and trees, animals, insects and birds. All beings want to live and thrive and survive. Because of these constant examples from nature and my domestic animals I have a different perspective on dealing with my own tough physical challenges. Teachers and examples come in all forms. I just have to open my eyes and heart to what is in front of me.

This one hits very close to home. While we were growing up, one of my maternal uncle's wife passed away at a young age. They had two boys. One was 3 and the other about 18 months. My mother decided to bring home the 3 year old and care for him as he has been born with polio in his right arm and leg and needed help to do anything. Mom's vision was to get him to be independent and not become an object of sympathy. We started teaching him, supporting him and loving him like no one had ever. When it was time, we admitted him to the very best of schools which had empathy and compassion as its core along with other montessori curriculum. I was given the responsibility to care for him and help him regain his strength on the right side. What started as a physio therapy and ayurvedic approach to regaining strength, ended up in building a strong bond with him. 2-3 times a week I had to take him in my bicycle for 10 kilometers, have him undergo his therapy and ride back. We did this for a few ... View full comment
