Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion that "all creatures die into it, and they live by it" - that decay and ending are not opposed to life but are, in fact, its most patient and essential work? Can you share a personal story of a time when something in your life composted slowly - a loss, a season of waiting, a relationship that ended - and only later revealed itself as the dark, rich soil from which something new grew? What helps you stay present to the slow accumulations in your own life, the leaves and stories quietly falling, rather than rushing past them in search of more visible signs of growth?

I enjoyed reading Collecting Leaves and Stories, authored by Wendell Berry. I am very fond of taking evening walks. Now, however, I am not able to walk as much as I would like. I am 101 years old, and I can no longer take long walks as I once did. My father was also very fond of walking. I enjoyed taking walks with my father, his friends, and my own friends. While we were walking, my father would often tell us stories, usually with a theme of serving others. We enjoyed listening to these stories and learning the lessons they offered. He often told us stories from the two great Indian epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Through these stories, we learned many valuable lessons about life. My father was not only a wonderful storyteller but also a very admirable teacher. I am deeply grateful to him for teaching us significant lessons about life. Reading this article has raised several questions in my mind. One of them is the seed question: All creatures die into it, and... View full comment

Working with Seniors for close to 19 years they have taught me this most valuable lesson. Each person I met has a story inside me. Now I am reaching middle age and a face or a name will spark a memory of many from my past. I regularly and sincerely ask "How are you today" and I expect a real answer. It is not easy aging in the various economic, pandemic, political and changing climates but every human has done it and will do it if you are lucky to reach old age. Watch the news and you will see those who never got the chance to slow down, be still, ponder, watch and truly enjoy this marvelous life we are granted!
I am always saddened by the many I have lost, but it IS their stories that bring a smile to my face year after year.

So very good! Amen to their stories bring a smile to your face!
We are expressions of life. Life is present through us. Birth and death are the beginning and end of life in this human form. I don't think of decay and ending as opposed to life or as being life's patient or essential work -- I think of decay and ending as aspects of life that happen to human appearances. Some aspects of special relationships, such as specific events, have composted slowly, and some aspects, such as the relationships' importance to me, stay intact and alive as part of me and are the dark rich soil from which I grow. What helps me stay present to the slow accumulations is knowing all of life and life's experiences pass quickly, so don't ignore them, the slow accumulations are the way of nature, and they are valuable as they occur. It also helps me to know that the growth I need is here and now, not there and then, and I don't want to rush past what is present while looking for what isn't.

I especially think true is your saying that the growth I need is here and now! (Not there and then.). Adding to our buckets today, tomorrow and everyday of our lives is most important in sustaining Health and a rich Mind! Right now!

Such a powerful metaphor , being a balcony gardener growing my own food and composting ..it came alive or me.

I went through an simple issue of leg IT band streach and over period of time I "had"to start eating animal protein . this has was giving me lot of trpouble letting go my identity as an VEGAN and animal rights activist for almost 2 decades, I use to teach people to be vegan and be humane.. I see it this letting go on one identity has open door to new pragmatic was of living and still being compassionate , thank you and grateful . It is like this bucket... it has many things in it too tightly bound identity , now I am not vegan but human.

I believe we do not need any conscious effort to be must collect leaves and stories.. or anything we just need to super aware and connected to our spirit as being who we truly are " loving creatures" trying to survive and thrive and meet our needs of love and respect...
