Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion that there is "work we do because we have to, and work that somehow returns us to ourselves"? Can you share a personal story of a time when a small, uncelebrated act - the washed dishes, the letter finally written, the friend called - became, without your quite meaning it to, a way of meeting your own grief, helplessness, or capacity for care? What helps you find your way back to "some work of love close at hand" when the scale of the world's troubles makes it hard to believe that quiet, unwitnessed effort could possibly be enough?

"There is work we do because we have to, and there is work that somehow returns us to ourselves."

It's unfortunate that an organization named Awakin would promote the very tenents of what keeps the world asleep.

Work that returns us to ourselves! Meta cognition, moving meditation, functional mobility, a walk using all the senses, doodling or watercolor play, collaging and journaling the memorabilia kept from a trip, event or just spending time with loved ones. Indeed it all returns us to ourselves!

This passage written by Randall Amster is like a gift offered to me to think about different kinds of work I do on a daily basis and the kinds of work I do on a special occasion. I do both kinds of work voluntarily. Nobody in my family expects me to do anything beyond my capacity. They love me uncondionally. In fact they provide thier help and support to me whenever I need it.

When I was a student in a college we were asked to read a book titled Work As Worship by Mark Russell. I was looking forward to reading this book. Now I am 101 years old and I still love to read or listen to books that are meangful to me. Certain books are like my lifelong friends. I enoy reading them and I happy to share my learnings with my family members, friends and my adult students taking online classes with me.
I enjoy doing such work and learning something new. And I also enjoy sharing my learnings with others. Such work becomes worship to me.
Namaste.

Hello Dr Dave'

Inner work outer work!!! It's truly one concept without separation. Outer work, connect to the inner benefits and inner work, affects the outer benefits.

It's an illusion to think these are separate or exclusively individual

I continue to enjoy the gross over the years and then I continue with every day as I mindfully breeze, observe, and reveal where I am at. A book by Joanne Didian titled "I write to find out what I am thinking" coincides with the idea of "I am breathing and observing to find out what I am observing and experiencing "

Dr Dave's teachings are my foundation for this Greatest , ongoing reveal.

I am grateful!!

Namaste

Amster makes a distinction between work that we do because we have to and work that returns us to ourselves. For me, any work can return us to ourselves, sometimes to our surprise. For me, work is activity I do not for the joy of doing it but to accomplish a goal; if I do enjoy the activity it likely becomes less enjoyable as I do it to accomplish the goal. When I do home chores out of care for my wife, my doing those activities shows my care and my capacity to care; those aren't my goals, they are more my motivation in doing the activities and an expression of my care, so even if I don't enjoy the activities, I'm not doing them to achieve a goal, so my doing them isn't work in my definition of work. What helps me do activities of love when the world makes it hard to believe that my effort could be enough is my understanding of what work is and my not caring what the world believes.
