Seed Questions for Reflection

How do you relate to the notion that doubt, once it takes root, has a way of "creeping into everything"? Can you share a personal story of a time when mindfulness of the body helped you move through doubt and take action? What helps you move through the paralysis of wanting to be "absolutely sure" before acting?

Doubt, like most any activity, can easily become a habit. A few choices that don't work out can plant self-doubt that quickly takes root. Feeling disappointed, hurt, betrayed can become doubt in others. Ajahn Pasanno says mindfulness of the body helps, but doesn't say much as to what he means by that. Mindfulness of the body means to me to make central in my decision making what I am experiencing or feeling in my body in relation to the decision I will make, which includes paying attention to my heart, my inner voice, my gut, my intuition, and my dreams, all of which I trust more than my thinking. I once joined a business following my thinking and ignoring my heart, which was a mistake, and I left the business following my heart, which turned out very well. What helps me move through the paralysis of wanting to be absolutely sure is knowing there is no absolutely sure and feeling confident that following my heart and feelings will turn out positively.

Life is not a straight line. It takes many curves and it makes it difficult to make a clearcut wise choice. Such a stance drains my energy. I feel stuck and stagnant. On the other hand if I make a quick and unwise choice I may hurt not only myself but also people connected with me. And if I do not make the right choice and remain stagnant I miss the opportunity of expanding and enriching the web of my relationships. I was born and raised in Gujarat State (India)which is mainly a vegetarian state. In 1959, I came to Chicago on a Fulbright Exchange program. I was very happy to study for my graduate degree in Education. There was a graduate student from Poland named Slavek. He became a close member of our family. Once he invited us for dinner at his place. He knew we were a vegetarian family. He made a simple vegetarian dinner for us. The food was simple but it was very fulfilling. His empathetic and loving heart made the food very delicious and fulfilling. When we relate to ... View full comment
