Through The Fire: Sitar Strings, Sacred Struggles, and Soul Force
In 2023, when fire outside of Los Angeles destroyed over 9,000 homes and buildings, it became a crucible for Paul Livingstone, a sitarist and composer who is one of the few American disciples of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar. Since his youth, Paul has been deeply rooted in the traditions of Indian classical music, jazz, and world music in a musical journey intertwined with his path as a seeker. Having turned his home and musical instruments for healing to ashes, the 2023 fire purified and renewed Paul's devotion, offering a rekindled vision for what music and life can be in service of healing, justice, and beloved community. The experience reinforced his commitment to the Soul Force Project, a healing arts initiative he started more than a decade ago in his burned-down but renewing neighborhood, a historically diverse and richly layered community in Los Angeles, where he and his wife have convened artists, neighbors, and allies across race, faith, and musical traditions to reclaim spaces of collective grief and courage.
