Finding My Inner Voice: A Journey From Comfortable Suffering to Blissful Anxiety

April 12, 2025

"I cried the first night, convinced I would fail. Today I can't imagine doing anything else," Ray Kauffman said of his new career as a teacher, after a 37-year corporate career. In 2023, he learned that a local underserved school had not had a baseball team since 2009. That was the seed for his starting a charity to give every kid the chance to play baseball, earning Ray recognition as Volunteer of the Year. He then heard the voice of the Universe calling him to fill an open high school teaching position, an awareness he attributes to his experience in a Service Space Laddership pod. He told his confused bosses he was resigning from his influential position to teach at the lowest performing public school in Michigan. Now finishing his first year, he says: "It's clear they don't need a hero. They're exhausted. They need to know that they are cherished." And for Ray, it is not to say, "I am serving," but to "become the service."
