As an urban dweller and recent home-owner, I have developed a greater responsibility and stewardship for the physical surroundings of the block I live on, and a responsibility to develop and nurture positive relationships with my neighbors. Sometimes an easy task, as there are great people here, sometimes a difficult task, as we are in close proximity to gun violence and drug-related crime. Healing is sorely needed here. I respond deeply to the line in the prayer, about the healers: "May they be fueled by passionate love for the earth...may they transform fear, rage and grief into compassion and the inspiration to act in service of what they love." I have the luck and resources to help clean up the block, beautify the tree pits our trees occupy. May I have the strength and courage to do the work. This is new territory for me, and I take tentative steps to heal, because there is an urgency to my actions, that I am saving my own life.
