Ah dear friends - this is a message my soul wanted to bathe in today. For quite a few years I have been circled around to a new/old cycle of unknowing and uncovering discovery of Earth capacious wide embrace of everything. Yes, love weaves in all, through all. Just like extraordinary spider fibers which are flexible with magical electromagnetic properties, love is the macro/micro quantum HUM in the cosmos. When there is more Hum in Human, there is more We in Well Being.
I am a fan of Vanessa Machado's thought leadership and really appreciated Hospicing Modernity. Right at the cusp of the pandemic, I visited Death Valley for the first time. Normally I'm a "tree person" and wondered why my spouse was so emphatic about experiencing this place with just rocks, dunes and some very old water. Ahhh - after a few days, I began to slow down to rock time. I've always felt connected to rocks while hiking the Sierras and Andes (ah -- the vast scale of granite!) and the amazing array of colors and shapes made by earth's shrugging and stretching. Yet it wasn't until Death Valley that my ears and senses began to enter an altered state of listening WITH the rocks. How do they hear the wind? The noises of all the tiny creatures coming and going? It was a portal to a new perspective of all of Life.
This has been such an important shift in my life: "When I help I have a feeling of satisfaction. When I serve I have a feeling of gratitude. These are very different things." Thank you for this wise and potent reminder of the way to move from the Whole to serve the Whole.
I think these four levels are one good way to capture types of listening and also not the only way. He chooses a one-to-one human conversation to analyze. Sometimes we are conversing in the context of a larger gathering - and we are listening to the current speaker, we are listening to our own internal reactions and we may also be listening to the energies of the entire room/gathering. For me, this fourth level of listening to/with emergence is when we are attuned to the larger field and that may be outside with or without humans.
This speaks volumes about what is around us. I have experienced a way of sensing when my gaze is soft and my ears attune differently. The glory in any moment is that close.
This beautiful story shares about different levels of listening. Over time, I have started hearing strains from the ancestors and, at times, what feels like sound waves from the bigger Universe, unbound by clock time.
This is wonderful and reminds me of the four quadrant box of urgent/important/not urgent/not important. I read it in Stephen Covey's book the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and I've seen it attributed to Eisenhower. There is that short term dopamine boost from checking off tasks -- and yet for the big issues, I've only seen change appear when we actually sit with an issue long enough to see how to align energies beyond our own.
Ah -- how beautiful: "we need to remember to bless the life around us and the life within us." Especially if you live on the 6th floor in a big city. The life energy is everywhere.
