Aligning Structures With Care

Tania: To actually overcome all these obstacles, no? Because it's obvious, right? If it would be so easy to live a compassionate life, we would all do it, right? But there are many, many different conditions, and also the world we created is a very, let's say, the motivational system.

I mean, healthcare and education and science, very competitive systems, right? So, I wouldn't say they are rooted in the system of care, right? They are rooted in the system of power, of achievement, of competition, threat. So, we also have to see in which institutional systems we are embedded, right?

And that is something I discovered being my own, being a leader in an institutional setting. That we cannot change from within. I mean, you can do a lot of meta and compassion training, but if you are in a system which is absolutely the contrary in terms of institutional design, right? It will basically block.

So, I think a school teacher put it very clearly, said, if I give meta-meditation course to little children, and then they come out, and they are beaten up by Erin D.T. by their teachers, which are still in a very hierarchical, patriarchal old system. The harm it does to these children who just open up their hearts is 10 times bigger, right? So, what I came to see is that if you really want to change, you need to align the structures and also the institutional design up to the contracts and the legal backbone of a system with the values of compassion, love, and care.

And it's not enough. to just say, let's train our mental intention and brain. It is very important to do that, but it's not enough to change a system, right? And that's what I was tackling over many, many years, right?

Doing this internal change programs, seeing how this brings people into flourishing, but then now I brought these systems, for example, I brought these diet programs into schools and into healthcare systems, not to therapists, to medical doctors. We had 60% dropout rate at the beginning screening, because they were all in burnout, so vulnerable, depressed, and stressed that they could not even take part in such a study. 60% of people who were lining up to, who wanted to do the training and were interested. We had 1,000 people, teachers, who were interested to do diet training 8 weeks as a scientific study, and we had to exclude 60%.

Because. You see what I mean? There's much more to it than just saying, oh, let's do this training for everyone, right? Those who need it most can perhaps not profit from it, because they are so weak that they cannot even engage in everyday practice.
