Affecting Others

Nipun: That exactly is what I want to ask you about, is the effect we have on others. So, it seems like we've got an orchestra inside of us. And that's much more in symphony, that's playing a symphony when we are in coherence, if I'm getting these words right. But you are, or the other person, is also doing the same dance, and the boundaries are not just skin wide.

And so, I guess my question is, how does— Say you're in a super coherent state, you're connected with your heart, you're having a thought of appreciation, and you're having these beautiful sine waves with your heart rate variability, and you meet me, and I've just had a bad day, and I'm thinking, oh my god, how… so what happens if your coherence meets my incoherence? Or maybe discoherence, maybe a better word. Incoherence has different implications. And what happens in another state where your coherence meets my coherence?

Are we both then better off? So how can you compare and contrast those scenarios?

Rollin McCraty: Yeah, these are great questions. So, if you're in a more coherent state, think of it as you are radiating in a more coherent field environment. And then somebody who's maybe had a bad day or just got stressed out or something. It's not that they don't have choice or agency.

They do, but you're creating a field environment that can help lift them into a more coherent state. Especially if they put any effort into it themselves. That's really what the research suggests. So we… what a classic experiment.

God, I forget what year, long, long time ago, that was part of… that I helped facilitate for a PhD dissertation study, was a researcher who had 40 people and put them… divided them into groups of four, then they're all wired up around a table. And he taught 3 of the 4 how to shift into coherence. They had some of the HRV coherence biofeedback technology, which is one of the fastest ways to learn how to get into this coherent state, and practice it, 2 weeks before the experiment, so they had time to practice and were able to shift into coherence. The fourth person in each group was naive to the real purpose of the experiment, right?

And then… but so basically, the three people were signaled in a way that the other person, the fourth person didn't know, to shift into coherence. They were doing it, and you can just make your eyes open. Nobody needs to know you're doing it. So the experiment was to say, well, what happens to this naive person?

Naive in terms of the experiment, right? And overall, across all these groups, they were lifted into a higher state of coherence. Right? And their rhythms started to synchronize with each other within the groups during this coherent state.

So, let's say there's very real, measurable impact. Now, if somebody's really pissed off and angry, they can be around a coherent person. Doesn't mean they're gonna have to shift, I mean, we'd have our choice. But it does create a field environment that makes it easier for people to come back to balance to find their…

Nipun: So is there a regenerative effect that can happen?

Rollin McCraty: So, in that case, the three coherent people really supported the one person who didn't know about this, right? It supported their coherence. And they became more coherent. They were lifted into a higher state.

Nipun: So, is 3 better than 1? And what if you had 30?

Rollin McCraty: Okay.

Nipun: 30 coherent people, and one of me that's just really angry.

Rollin McCraty: Yeah, now, as we shift into some of the other paradigms. Because we kind of kept this locally, this was all 90s for us, as we were talking about. We then moved from… well, this is really neat, what we're seeing here, and so a lot of our work, even now, I'm still interested in, is group. Is the social.

Side of things, how do we learn to get along with each other, right? How do we connect in the heart? That's really what the key is. I think that's our next step for humanity, in terms of the next step in the evolution of our collective or global consciousness.
