Rollin McCraty: Yeah, you're just stable. The coherent… think of coherence as stability. Right? Our composure. Across multiple levels. And that… that opens up a channel, a communication channel with… between other people that's… beyond your normal capacity to sense the subtler information that's in the field.
Nipun: I mean, so most of us intuitively kind of feel that if I have a kind and loving thought towards somebody, I feel different, and I feel stable. But you have been looking at it from a scientific lens, so can you explain what heart coherence actually is? So let's say I'm feeling completely off. As a layperson, I'm just totally off, off-center. What would trigger heart coherence, and then what are the physiological implications, and how does it then ripple out?
Rollin McCraty: Yeah, that is a deep question, because it turns out that's a rabbit hole that can go down many paths, of what that really means. Let's start, define, with, coherent, just the word coherence. And I think most people have an intuitive understanding that coherence is a good thing, right? Things in sync.
But it's a term that's actually used in all branches of science. I mean, from the very small, the molecular biology, all the way to the universe. I mean, coherence is a term that shows up in all of those. Right?
And it's a kind of what it basically built into. Coherence is really talking about how many things, but how synchronized, or what's the coherent behavior of all the parts that make up a complex system? Right? Like, if we talk about the human body, there's vast complexity on many different scales.
Right? And so all those things have to work together in harmony for us to even be a living system, let alone an optimally functioning living system. So, within that implies that there's some type of communication or connection between all the parts of a system. Right?
And that can be many... it can be chemical, it can be electromagnetic, it can be quantum, where these connections occur. So, basically, in a coherent system means all the parts are working together harmoniously, which means energy efficiency, and another thing embedded, or just implied in that term. Is that the wholeness is greater than the sum of the parts, when they're working together in this coherent, ordered way.
