Speaker: Ramesh Bhai Sanghvi

How is love an essential ingredient in the development of a child? Is there a contradiction between love and academic development? Is education of the heart possible without heartful educators?

This Sunday, Gandhian educator Ramesh Sanghvi will be in conversation with Chaitanya Bhatt, the founder of "Ka-shaala" in Dhedhuki village, Gujarat. The conversation will be in Hindi.

Born in 1947 the year of India's freedom from Britain, Rameshbhai Shah is a child of freedom movement - brought up with the Gandhi-Vinoba values from parents who sought to balance both inner and outer work. 'Simple living and high thinking' remained a guiding principle for young Ramesh, who loved to read. He got educated under the aegis of Lokbharti, Sanosara - again, building up his Gandhian gene. Rameshbhai served as an academician and teacher in various institutes for around two decades to earn his livelihood. But he realized the debilitating power of the clutches of commercialism and opted out of the mainstream system to blaze a trail on his own. An institution builder, he founded, among others 'Akshar Bharti' to spread the message of true learning among the children. Another cause close to his heart is that of village development. He wholeheartedly devoted his energies in a small aadivasi village in Kutch, teaching kids and guiding adults alike. Balancing collective decision making with a bias for action, he earned the trust of the donor community. As a result, any project associated with Rameshbhai would likely never suffer from lack of resources. But all along, institution building takes second spot to his spiritual seeking. His family and friends alike, chief among them his life partner Jyotiben, have supported his journey for it to bloom the beautiful way it has. He has written and contributed to several books - in the sphere of education, spirituality and coronary heart disease (Rameshbhai suffered three heart attacks in early 2000s). Currently, he edits the Gujarati bi-monthly "Shashwat Gandhi" (Eternal Gandhi). He has been a recipient of several awards viz. Sister Nivedita award, Sandipani award, et al. We welcome him and hope to dive deep into his lifelong tryst in the field of education of the heart.

Chaitanya Bhai is a Gandhian educator, whose idea of scale is to go from small to smaller. In a small village of Dheduki, he runs a school that is steeped in virtues, that he feels are "caught not taught." Getting creative with local resources, innovating in small ways and big, after decades of work, and building deep community ties along the way, Chaitanya Bhai is a model for social change world over. He has received recognition from countries as far away as Sweden, but when you meet him, he will opt to tell you stories of how they started their dorm by putting a flat log of wood on a treetop. In keeping with that spirit, you would be hard pressed to find material on him on the internet, but here's an account by a young man who lived with him in Dheduki for a year.
