Thanks for this. I’ve always loved Hesse for Siddhartha but didn’t know of this work. For all these reasons he cites, I too have always loved trees..I remember crying hysterically as a child when a neighbor cut his giant pecan for seemingly no reason. Now i can explain why.

wow, I thought sure the writer was going to say something like "I knew then that the $50K in my pocket would go a long way toward repairing that church and thus improve the lives of Gertrude's community."

A few yrs ago I caught myself in this exact negative mindset after taking a trip with an acquaintance who found fault with absolutely everything. I suddenly became aware that I surely bring others down on occasion in much the same way. I now make the effort to follow criticism with praise. You can find the positive in everything and everyone if you stop and think. And thinking positively has definitely improved all aspects of my life.

This story is an excellent way to teach listening as well as compassion; I know I certainly needed this lesson.

Having had a series of health issues over the last few years, I am deeply aware of morning in terms of how I feel. I have noticed that when the sun comes shining through the window I am immediately happier. When I step outside and listen to the birds, I can face the day. This has become a routine that gets me going, lifts me up, and makes me appreciate the fact that I CAN rise out of bed, move, and enjoy life. Thich Nhat Hanh always voices that which is hard to put into words. THANK YOU for posting this.

This has happened to me before on two or three occasions, all of them much too brief in duration. But I distinctly remember that I felt connected to the universe and all that is in it... and I also had the thought that this is what it feels like to live eternally, to live long enough to be able to feel the essence of all living things, to be connected to all living things.... and that if only we had that privilege of eternal life, there could never be any war, violence, hatred, racism, etc. ... But of course, we all know that much is just common sense.
